We have raised caterpillars in the past - Monarchs, a Black Swallowtail (very striking!) - but somehow each time the miraculous process in which a fat caterpillar becomes a beautiful butterfly amazes me! A few weeks ago, Mama found six Monarch caterpillars on our Milkweed plant, and the last two came out of chrysallis this morning. We let the four oldest ones go ~ what a sight: the fluttering orange and black against the bright blue sky and autumn leaves!
